Finally 10 fingers and 10 toes

Calan showing off his webbed fingers when he was a day old.

Calan was born with his left middle and ring fingers fused together. From day one, I knew today would happen. And I am so glad that today is now over.

Calan had his fingers separated this morning. It was a simple procedure, but it was a 3-hour surgery that included a skin graph from his abdominal/groin area.

As any mother would be, I was pretty nervous. But man was my guy a trooper. He was nothing but smiles all this morning. I was nervous how he would do without being able to eat beforehand, but he was an all-star.

Calan before his surgery smiling and having
fun with all the nurses. (And all the nurses
came by to see the cute little baby.)
Even when Calan was back in surgery, they put his oxygen mask on and he just looked at his doctor and smiled. He didn't cry when he woke up. He was perfect. He made this so easy for his mother and father.

I finally got to hold him after surgery.
My perfect angel.

Now, my week begins. He is sleeping peacefully in his crib right now and will be pretty out of it for the rest of the day. But starting tomorrow, my job will be to keep a now mobile baby as immobile as possible and to keep him from chewing on his bandages. It should be an interesting week, but officially having 10 fingers and 10 toes is priceless.
